The Fisherman is pleased to announce that this blog has joined the prestigious Taxblogger.org. It is a 'loose confederation of bloggers, writers, and other tax freaks who like to write and talk about taxes'.

We should fit right in, then.

The Fisherman apologises for the silence. This was due to a short spell in hospital. Nothing to worry about now. All is as it should be, and the blog is now back on track. More entries in due course.

Why this unusual name for our blog?

There is an interesting story in the Bible about Jesus and his disciple, Peter. The tax collectors were going around collecting the temple tax, and one of them asked Peter whether Jesus paid tax. Peter said yes, and went to find Jesus. When they met, Jesus gave him a short lecture on the tax system. The upshot was that both of them were exempt from paying tax. However, so as not to offend the tax collectors, Jesus decided that they would pay, anyway. He asked Peter (a fisherman by vocation) to go fishing, and that the first fish he caught would have a coin in its mouth. This turned out to be enough to pay both their taxes.

So there we have it. Fish can pay afford to pay tax. We humans are already taxed to the hilt, while the Government's greed just grows. We want the Government to leave us alone, and turn to our piscine friends instead. God knows they can afford to pay.

This new blog will provide (occasionally witty) commentary on any UK tax stories in the news. The tax burden has been rising steadily for a while, and we thought it would be a good idea to talk about it. Well, there isn't much else we can do about it at the moment. This blog will also trawl the choppy waters of UK tax policy to bring you news of any stealth taxes. As this is a gobbledegook-free zone, our articles will be presented in friendly, non-technical language. Above all, we shall try to have fun. Believe me, this is possible.

This blog is written by The Fisherman, a tax adviser with many years' experience dealing with the finer points of tax legislation. When not reading and writing about tax, The Fisherman spends any free time down at the wharf.
